Family room
My family room is a work in progress but it has come a long way in the 9 weeks since we’ve moved in. It started out with good bones but dark colors & terrible window treatments. Here’s a few pics of what it looked like on move in day….

You would never even know it had pretty transom windows! The first thing I did was rip the ruffled valences off … But I had to wait a while before we could paint the “orange” walls

Here it is with just a few of my pieces in the room, I was taking pics even while the movers were bringing stuff in (notice the curtains are already down!! LOL)

Notice the pink marble surround inside the mantel…doesn’t quite go with the orange! Some people actually told me to keep the wall color……lol….not a chance!

Here it is with my landscapes hung & the mantel decorated. You can really see how pink the marble is in this pic! Also, notice the ugly wallpaper border in the kitchen in the background ( that’s been long gone thank goodness….but not much else has changed in there yet unfortunately)

I have never changed the furniture arrangement …this just worked out so well the first way I tried it

Here is the beginning of testing out colors for the walls

Hmmmm….. I think I’m liking this but check out how the pink marble stands out even more! ..& of course the mantel needs to be painted too

Ok….here is the mantel primed & the shell design removed. Huge improvement!! But holy pinkness…..every change is making that pink even more obvious! Lol

So I had to live with the pink mantel & half painted walls for a couple weeks til my painters could get back out to paint….. Ughhh

Ahhhhhh……breath of fresh air! Nothing beats a fresh coat of (light) paint!
We continued the color all the way up on the ceiling which is vaulted

And my gorgeous new chandy came in just in time to hang in the freshly painted room

Perfect!!! …oh and the chandelier isn’t bad either (wink wink)
So…….here are some pics of the finished room as it looks today

The coffee table will be replaced with something nicer when I find one, the tv will eventually be mounted & I have 4 pressed herbariums that will hang on either side ( the same ones that are just resting on the console). Being that this is the first wall you see when you enter the room, I’m considering doing some sort of art on sliders to hide the television when not in use

Something like this ( but with different art of course)

The mantel is painted & the pink marble is gone….yay!! I’m thinking about continuing the curtains on this wall but they will be in the way when opening the French door to the left of the fireplace….hmmmm….not sure yet

LOVE this console table & I was lucky to find one big enough to take up this huge wall space, the baskets are from Pottery Barn & are the perfect place for my magazines. The white pottery I have collected over the years & love seeing it all together

Love this big window! I’m probably going to install woven wood blinds at some point. I don’t want to block the pretty view outside & I love all the natural light, but the sun get pretty hot late in the afternoon

Close up of my tapestry pillow that I made with a remnant I had purchased on Ruby Lane

And a view from the hallway
That’s it folks!! Hope you enjoyed the before & after. This was a long one…good thing I had the day off ![]()
Have a great day
H~

Your home is looking beautiful! I love the checked loveseats! Are they slip covered? All of your furniture is lovely! The console table is perfect, too!
Thank you! Yes the loveseats are vintage & I had slipcovers made for them
Heidi, I am obsessed with your home! Do you mind sharing where you bought your console?
Andrea, Hi and thank you. The console came from a local furniture store, Greenfront Furniture in Manassas va. They carry all the major higher end manufacturers at discount prices. This particular vendor (don’t know the name) is new for them and most of their pieces have that reclaimed look. Good luck

Simply PERFECT! You have impeccable taste, and it shows, I love every single piece you have in this room, but I am in love with your tufted couch, if you don’t mind me asking, where did you purchase it, I would love to have one in my house, although I don’t think it would look as well in my house as it does in yours.
Thank you Kristal. I purchased the sofa from Arhaus furniture. It is featured with different fabric & two seat cushions but I was able to customize it. I have to say it is very well made ( 8 way hand tied springs) & the cushion has not gotten loose or sloppy looking & it gets used every day! Also, the depth is wonderful…it’s like having a huge daybed
Gorgeous….great vision. Looks like you are ready for a party now. Love the tv console and the checked fabric.
Can you show us the room again, please, when the prints are hung?
I will definitely post new pics with any changes
Your living room looks gorgeous! You move fast!
We have pink marble on the fireplace surrounds in our living room and master. Just to get by for now my husband sanded and painting the marble in our living room until we are able to replace it. I thought it would look cheesy but, it looks so much better! I will probably be sharing it on my blog soon.
That’s great..I can’t wait to see it! I had actually thought about that option because I was thinking we would have to remove the existing marble to replace it ( which would mean the entire mantel would have to be removed!) but it turned out that my husband was able to just reface the marble with new marble tiles. There are seams but we didn’t grout & you barely notice them
Love it!!! I have a question. How do you keep the white sofa clean? I really want white but am afraid I won’t be able to maintain it without covering it in plastic!!!!hahahaha.
Hi Debbie,
I dont have kids, just two small dogs….so I keep a throw on it for when they jump on it, otherwise it’s not a problem. I have a friend who has two white sofas & she pays an upholstery cleaner to come out & clean them every 4-5 months…I thought if mine gets to looking dirty I could do that. The best option is slipcovers of course but couldn’t have those with tufting…
What a beautiful home you have, thank you for sharing your pictures. Can you share the paint color in your family room, what a difference from the before to the after. I love it….
Thank you Karen. The paint color is Ben Moore Windsbreath ( darkened 25%)
Wow! What a transformation! I would have gone nuts as well looking at the orange paint and pine/oak fire surround–two of my most loathed design trends. You certainly made it look beautiful with the fresh paint and light palette. I absolutely love your decorative table in the corner with greek key etching…lovely! Can’t wait to see the room finished.
Warm regards,
Ashley
OOh, love the family room. This is a random question but are those beautiful branches real or faux?? Im hoping you say faux so I can get the same ones!!
Love your new home!
The branches are faux, Pottery Barn has some great ones
Absolutely gorgeous! So glad I jumped over tonight! I will have sweet dreams with your living room in my mind. Love the check! And just to confirm, is this Windsbreath or Ballet White? (I think you said Ballet White on my blog, but Windsbreath here.) Love it either way!
This room(family room) is winds breath (25 % darker) & the rest of the house is ballet white. Good luck!

Your family room is really lovely, warm and comfortable. I love that. And so glad to see those beautiful transoms. What a transformation. Thanks for sharing.

Hello Heidi. I found your blog through Joni’s Cote De Texas. You really have a beautiful home and I love the way you decorated it. Would you mind sharing your source for the chandelier? I’ve seen several similar ones but do like the one you got. Thank you.
Which chandelier are you referring to?

The Italian style with tassels on it that is in your Family Room. Thanks!
I LOVE that one!! I found that on a One Kings Lane tastemaker tag sale! Sorry, I know you were wishing it came from a store. Check them out though, they have pretty chandys from time to time

Will do, Thanks!
Hello. I absolutely love your blog and your home. I just found you today through Cote de Texas. Can’t believe I didn’t find you long ago. I must have been living under a rock. Anyway, I am looking for a light almost white gray for my own home and was wondering if you would share with me the names of the paint colors you have used in your home. They are beautiful and I would appreciate this information. Have a fabulous day.
Sheila,
The colors are Ballet White & Windsbreath by Ben Moore. I chose to darken them by 25% but they are also pretty as is
Good luck!
Can you tell
me how you made the tapestry pillow?
