Archive for January, 2013

I am just now getting around to posting about Darryl Carter’s new retail boutique that opened up in DC’s Shaw neighborhood this fall. I was there on opening day and it did not disappoint. The shop is located at 1320 9th St NW ( which just so happens to be a short walk around the corner from my friend Steve’s DC row house that I posted about here)

Darryl had the entire exterior & interior of the building painted a shade of white from his new paint color line available through Benjamin Moore here

This daybed, hyde & giant concrete lion greet you upon first entering

But what really steals the stage is this massive stone arch salvaged from an old Maryland estate. It had to be moved in pieces and reassembled with steel reinforcement to support it (please excuse the blurry pics)

Behind it are built ins made from salvaged doors & drawers from the butlers pantry at Dumbarton House, a Georgetown landmark. Displayed inside were various one of a kind handmade china, glassware, utensils and such.

Down the hall and in various rooms the art made you stop and stare. Darryl has a way of turning the most interesting items into art.

His retail studio is even equipped with a full working kitchen, Viking range and all!

Love all the clean lines in his sofa collection

And so many wonderful linens to pick from for the upholstery

One of Darryl’s design tricks is using printed linens on the reverse for a very subtle hint of color and pattern. This works well with his signature pale monochromatic look

Loved this unusual footstool!

Upstairs was mostly beds and linens
I highly recommend stopping by and checking it next time you are in DC….

You may even get to meet the design celebrity in person :)
He was very sweet, charming and humble! He suggested we take the pic “in front of something sexy” :)

New lamps & random pics

Ive been spending a lot more time at home than I’m used to with not being able to work, and I’m realizing just how much I really do love my house. It is literally flooded with sunlight all day and I use all the main rooms ( I follow the sun like a cat!) I’m actually in my husbands office as I type this and the sun is baking my legs…..ahhhhh, a good feeling in the middle of winter.
I had purchased a pair of lamps from Joss and Main and they came in recently. I love them

They look like architectural fragments set on a lucite base. And I especially love the rectangular shade. I saw some very similar lamps here for quite a bit more than what I bought mine for. I have had great luck finding unique & antique items on Joss and Main & One Kings Lane

As a matter of fact, the pair of Swedish Demi lunes were purchased on One Kings Lane If you haven’t checked them out yet, you should. Word of caution….it’s addicting!

Aren’t they the cutest?
I’m feeling like I want curtains in this room but feel torn because I don’t want to cover the wonderful view, and I love all the light coming in!

Not sure how they’d hang with the Demi lunes in the window

Do you think it would look too crowded? I’m picturing the palest shade of gray silk

My first cherub (putti) I ever purchased. This ones not antique but adorable nonetheless.

The boys love the sun too :) They take full advantage of every room in this house.
I will post pics of my husbands office soon, made some changes & purchased a small sofa for the window (hense my sunbathing)
Have a great week!

Provence in Warrenton

Walked by this house in town today and thought it looked like it was right out of Provence. A tiny little gem tucked away on a side street….cute!

Love the chippy gray painted shutters
Hope your weekend is going great. We had beautiful weather here today so I got out of the house for a bit and had a wonderful walk
Thanks to everyone for all the wonderful comments and prayers. I’m out of my huge bulky cast & in a much smaller splint, with my fingers out so I’m much more comfortable. Ahhh…baby steps :)

Slowing down

Hello everyone. Sorry for my absence but it has been a difficult holiday season for me this year. I had an injury on Christmas day where a knife pierced my wrist, completely severing my ulnar nerve in my dominant hand. Three of my fingers and my palm are numb and I have limited range of motion & grip strength. I went in for surgery on Jan 2 & am now in a cast up to my elbow. This coming Tues, the cast will be removed & I will have a splint for two more weeks and then I will start physical therapy. To top things off, the week between my injury & my surgery I managed to catch the worst stomach bug I’ve ever had & was sick as dog for four days. Then my husband came down with it New Years Eve..just as I was starting to feel better! Needless to say, I’m glad the holidays are over & am looking forward to getting on with my recovery & back to my life.
They are not giving me any guarantees on what to expect. I’ve been told not to expect my hand to ever be the way it was before the injury & that nerves regenerate at about an inch a month so we are looking at 8 months for maximum recovery. Theres so much unknown at this point…when will i be able to work again…remember i am a hairstylist & need both hands to do my job. Although this has been very difficult for me, it is giving me the opportunity to rely on my faith and Gods promises.

Isaiah 41:10, “So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.” (NIV)

Psalm 71 20-21
Though you have made me see troubles, many & bitter, you will restore my life again;
From the depths of the earth you will again bring me up.

Psalms 46:1, “God is our refuge and strength; our very present help in times of trouble

I am believing for a complete healing and restoration

Now on to some pretties…. I don’t have much for you from my home since all decor projects have come to an abrupt halt…but my friend Steve is still moving along on his place in DC. We made a decision on lighting & they were just installed last week. Sorry for the blurry pics but they were taken on his iPhone

This one went in the living room. I was not there on install day so I’m hoping he had it hung high enough!

And in the dining room! Love the amber colored crystals & how they really stand out against the white walls
Next he is having all the wood floors replaced with new lighter heart of pine. There was not much room left for another sanding since the house is older & has been refinished a number of times already.
I will keep updating on the progress. My hand is killing me since I’m having to type with my left hand so I’m signing off.
God Bless
