Just a sneak peek at my Carrara marble counters…they were installed yesterday while I was at work & I couldn’t wait to get home to see them… It was the worse torture!!! But I LOVE them!!!!

20130613-155317.jpg

I am head over heels in love with my new Perrin & Rowe bridge faucet too….so glad I did not compromise on that! It is gorgeous….definitely the “jewelry”
My farmhouse sink (Kohler) is nice & deep….can’t wait to use it. The faucet is not hooked up yet because my husband still has to remove the backsplash & install subway tile in its place

Today I came home to this…..so much for the “pretties”….. That didnt last long.

20130613-160027.jpg

Yes, this is backwards but he didnt have a chance to remove before installation & we had no idea it was going to be such a nightmare…what did they use … crazy glue??

We are still waiting on the rest of our appliances and we need to order the new door fronts so this is going to take some time to complete. I am thrilled so far though and will keep posting updates!

My new bed was delivered today and I love it!!

My putto (cherub) found a place to hang out too

20130607-210349.jpg

It came while I was at work and couldn’t wait to get home to see it. It’s even more beautiful in person. I love the upholstered headboard! It’s a keeper :)

On another note, my fabricator is coming out in the morning to remove the granite counters in my kitchen. My husband needs them removed so he can rework the cabinet that will house my new farmhouse sink!! ( I didn’t think I’d be able to get one since we were keeping our existing cabinets, but he will be able to make it work) so exciting!!!! And I’m told the marble will be installed on Wed! Still need to purchase my new faucet. I’ve been looking at the Perrin and Rowe bridge faucet in polished nickel

20130607-220200.jpg

It also comes with these handles

Here it is in a few kitchens

Gotta decide by tomorrow so I can have it in time

Now it’s time to get in my big comfy bed….nite all!

I’ve been wanting an iron canopy bed ever since seeing this one on Pinterest
Designed by Anelle Primos
There’s something so relaxing and ethereal about this bedroom. I love everything in it, esp those Tara Shaw chests/night stands & Bviz pillows. I’ve been staring at this photo for months….makes me want to change everything in my bedroom. I love the lack of color & simplicity. I find I keep wanting to go this direction more & more these days

Here are some more favorites I have been pinning

Im especially liking the combination of metal with an upholstered headboard. What are your thoughts? Do you love metal canopy beds or do you prefer wood?
The one I currently have is wood but I’m thinking of selling it to a friend & starting over. The new wood floors in my bedroom have me itching for a change ( gotta love that domino effect)

Here are a few contenders…

The floors are finally done & I love them! It feels like we got all new flooring installed. We’ve been busy moving back in today & there’s still lots to do but I wanted to just post a few pics before heading to bed…

I love how you see more grain in them now and of course that they are lighter. We were told not to put any rugs down for at least 2 weeks but I’m not really missing them. We only had a rug in the family room & office anyhow…and the zebra in the living room

Here’s the family room with the furniture back in ( and my new coffee table that I just found this week :) I cancelled the Lillian August one I had ordered because it was taking far too long to get, plus was ridiculously expensive) I think this one suits the room better
Ok….I’m out, my whole body hurts & hubs has been passed out for hours! Nite

Progress

All the flooring is finally laid & today they started sanding. I am super excited about all the pale loveliness ! Check out the progress…

20130415-181014.jpg

The dark around the edges is the original stain

Look at the difference between water based clear coat (on the left) & oil based (right)
I know which one I’m picking!

20130415-181827.jpg

20130415-181905.jpg

No more tile in the kitchen!!!!!! I’m so beyond thrilled!

20130415-183226.jpg

This is the only shot I got of the upstairs, it was too dark to take any pics of the bedroom by the time I got home. Tomorrow they will finish sanding & start applying the clear coat. We should be able to move back in by Saturday :)
The only regret I have is that we should’ve just gotten the other two bedrooms done at the same time but we needed a place to sleep/live & we were just thinking we could do them at a later date. In hindsight, we could have managed in the basement but oh well. Live & learn!
Have a great week!

Well….sort of! The hardwood floor guys have started removing the tile in the kitchen, and we’ve decided to have our existing floors refinished while they are here…….and we’re also having them install wood upstairs in the hallway & master bedroom area :) yay!!!

So we have kind of moved out….well technically we are still staying in the house but all the furniture from the main floor is now stored in the basement. And all our bedroom furniture is spread out between the other bedrooms, while we are sleeping in one of them..all cramped. Once the finish is applied to the floors, we will be moving into the basement sleeping on sofas…Oh joy. All in the name of pretty new floors…..but I keep telling myself it will be worth it in the end.

The tile is proving to be a royal nightmare to remove. Two days into it and its still not all gone. They are breaking it up in small pieces by hand… Bye bye hunter green!

20130412-222458.jpg

And here they have layed some of the new floor on the upstairs landing. You can see how much lighter it is from the original finish. I’m leaving it natural with a matte sealer. Can’t wait to see it all done! Wish us luck….the house is a dusty mess & my husband is feeling like his nerves are shot. He’s been home all day the past two days listening to hammers & banging non stop, and he has a huge list of projects to get to. As if building the kitchen cabinets weren’t enough, now he has this huge pile of mulch in our driveway that needs to be put in the flower beds…

20130412-223740.jpg

He’s still working on trying to get our sad pitiful lawn to come back. But Mother Nature is giving us some beautiful blooms…..never knew we had cherry blossoms!

So, the addition of the lovely new kitchen island made me hate the cabinets even more! Truthfully, there was nothing about the kitchen I even remotely liked and I cringed at the idea of posting any pics until I was able to do the remodel. But we decided recently that was not going to happen this year so my wonderful husband announced he was going to take on the task of painting the cabinets…….thinking this would tie me over for another year or so. Before the island, I hadn’t changed a single thing about the kitchen other than removing some wallpaper border & painting ( which is so unlike me) I just thought why bother, nothing’s going to make me like it short of a gut job!

Well I couldn’t have been more wrong!! Now don’t get me wrong, there’s still plenty I don’t like about this kitchen as you will see but I must say…..I had forgotten just what an impact a coat of paint can make! So for that reason alone, and hopefully to inspire some readers out there who maybe don’t love their cabinets, I decided to share some before & after pics.

Okay……ughhh….this pains me….. But here’s what the kitchen looked like the day we moved in

20130319-181757.jpg

20130319-182038.jpg

20130319-182101.jpg
See??? I wasn’t kidding! Obviously we didn’t buy this house for the kitchen. It was built in the 80′s and didn’t look like much had changed since then….including the appliances!! There were cherry cabinets, and short upper cabinets that connect to a soffit (totally gives away the age), tile flooring with a hunter green border, hunter green granite, brass hardware & that lovely wallpaper border. What’s not to like right?

Here it is with the wallpaper removed & fresh paint

20130319-183519.jpg

20130319-183542.jpg

This is pretty much how I’ve lived with it since June… I think I just put blinders on whenever I’d walk in there! I guess one saving grace was that this home has more separation between the kitchen & family room than newer houses do….so I wasn’t forced to stare at it all evening.

Anyhoo…in comes the new island

20130319-185935.jpg

20130319-190016.jpg

I couldn’t even post these pics cause the cherry cabinets just killed it

20130319-190348.jpg

Ahhhh…..a sight for sore eyes :)
The hubs priming away….I’m already liking them better!

20130319-190903.jpg

Notice we did manage to get a new fridge but we’re still dealing with that ancient oven/microwave combo! Changing out the appliances gets tricky when you plan on gutting & doing the kitchen from scratch so we’ve been reluctant to change too much yet

20130319-233610.jpg

I knew this would happen..LOL! I appreciate my husbands willingness to paint, but he’s really not the best painter & by day two he was crying like a baby from his body aching! So here I am…injured hand and all….taking over! We decided at this point it would be best to have our painter Larry spray the doors and we just concentrated on painting the base cabinets, which worked out great because this gave them a more smooth satiny finish.

So here’s the end result…..
Drumroll please……..

20130319-235831.jpg

New paint, new hardware & I added a rug to the floor to cover up as much of that tile as possible!

20130320-000434.jpg

20130320-000147.jpg

20130320-000559.jpg

20130320-000707.jpg

20130320-000836.jpg

20130320-001137.jpg

Ahhhhh….the power of white paint!!
Speaking of paint, we colormatched it to our existing trim color (which is custom)
The cost to build the island, paint & new hardware ended up around $700……. Not bad for having such an impact!!

20130321-100319.jpg

Here’s a close up of how smooth the finish looks ( we used pearl finish)
I can actually say I like my kitchen now… It flows better with the rest of the house….
And you know I will keep going from here! I’m getting all kinds of ideas on how to continue improving it…..stayed tuned :)

That’s right…..you know how one new thing can start a domino effect…

Joni recently posted a view of my kitchen on her blog Cote de Texas

But if you look close, there’s something different in this pic…..
Any ideas? I will post in a few days with more pics & info :)
Have a great week!

The surprise 50th wedding anniversary party was a huge success! Everyone showed up, my parents were surprised & a good time was had by all.
Here are a few pics…

Loved the Greek key designed cake. The theme was gold (for 50 years) & since we are Greek, I thought why not do a simple two tiered white cake with gold Greek key! Turned out beautiful and was delish!

20130212-183158.jpg

20130212-183426.jpg
And a big thank you to my cousin Mallamo who cooked almost all the food! Not sure why but I didn’t get a pic of the spread…was too busy by that point I guess! I also don’t have a good enough pic of my parents to show…my iPhone doesn’t take good night shots! (you’d think I’d go ahead & get a real camera by now!)
Also, thanks to everyone who took the time to comment on my post about my drapery dilemma. I ended up hanging them in time for the party & they look great!! I think they warm up the room without blocking out my sunlight

20130212-185103.jpg

Didn’t do the front window yet….still tryin to decide on that one :)

So in lieu of the party im having on Sunday, I’m trying to decide whether or not to hang curtains in my living room. I ordered the Thai silk in sand from Restoration Hardware. I have just pinned them to the window frame for effect to see if I even want to hang them…, & I still can’t decide!!
Here’s the room again with no curtains…

20130208-144201.jpg

Here it is with just a single panel on either side of the fireplace…

20130208-144349.jpg

Here it is with double panels..

20130208-144457.jpg
This looks way too crowded & messy to me. Of course they will hang better when properly hung on a rod, but you get the idea…
Then there’s the front window…. Do I hang curtains there & risk blocking the view?

20130208-144726.jpg
Does it look funny to see curtains on the other windows & not that one?

20130208-144820.jpg

20130208-145021.jpg
Which is better?
Why is it so easy to do someone else’s house & so difficult to do your own???
I’ve noticed it’s the same when it comes to my hair!
I need to make a decision quick….so I’d love to hear your opinions!!
