New shopping source

I have a (hair) client who’s moved to this area from Texas & she mentioned she was opening a French antique shop in Middleburg. So I have been patiently waiting for it to open. I happened to have some free time the other day so I drove out there to see how it was coming along. She (Connie) was in Costa Rica on vacation but the shop was fully stocked & ready to open its doors any day. I was lucky enough to get a sneak peek since I tried the door & it was open….they were sweet enough to let me look around & take photos. I also met Connie’s partner in this new venture, the great Kathy Alexander who owns Rousset Antiques & Textiles here (which is now part of The Gray Door) in Houston Texas. FINALLY…..one of Houston’s great antiques textiles dealers is in Virginia…I cannot contain my excitement!!! I love antique tapestry pillows & fortuny….exactly what she specializes in….& of course French antiques. I discovered while talking to her that I had actually purchased one of her pillows a couple of years ago from 1st Dibs! What a small world! And how am I going to save any money with all these gorgeous finds so close to me now???
The shop is called Foxfire Gallery & Antiques and it is located in a gorgeous building on Main Street in Middleburg Va

Kathy told me this knole sofa in the next picture had been in her husbands family for many years and had even made it through hurricane Katrina in New Orleans. It’s now covered in a luscious vintage Fortuny…and the pillows are also Fortuny
Her daughter was lucky enough to have this in her apartment ( before it was recovered )

There was a huge trunk nearby full of her beautiful pillows. Did you know she is good friends with Becky Vizard of Bviz ( also famous for her antique pillows )

Darryl Carter’s new boutique

I am just now getting around to posting about Darryl Carter’s new retail boutique that opened up in DC’s Shaw neighborhood this fall. I was there on opening day and it did not disappoint. The shop is located at 1320 9th St NW ( which just so happens to be a short walk around the corner from my friend Steve’s DC row house that I posted about here)

Darryl had the entire exterior & interior of the building painted a shade of white from his new paint color line available through Benjamin Moore here

But what really steals the stage is this massive stone arch salvaged from an old Maryland estate. It had to be moved in pieces and reassembled with steel reinforcement to support it (please excuse the blurry pics)

Behind it are built ins made from salvaged doors & drawers from the butlers pantry at Dumbarton House, a Georgetown landmark. Displayed inside were various one of a kind handmade china, glassware, utensils and such.

Down the hall and in various rooms the art made you stop and stare. Darryl has a way of turning the most interesting items into art.

One of Darryl’s design tricks is using printed linens on the reverse for a very subtle hint of color and pattern. This works well with his signature pale monochromatic look

Lucketts Design House

I left early this morning with a friend to go to Lucketts Design house in Lucketts Va. This little area is just outside of Leesburg & has several old houses & barns full of antiques & reclaimed furniture. (mostly newer stuff actually, with that reclaimed look) The Design house in particular is only open one weekend a month & they usually repaint all the interior rooms & fill it with new inventory every month. They are even nice enough to dip paint sticks in their custom paints so if anyone wants to copy a color, you can take one to your local paint shop & have it color matched!

Ok…that’s it for now guys! I managed to walk away with only the baskets. Truth is I don’t really need much, and I’m taking a break from buying things for the house…I need to save up for my big kitchen Reno, or master bath Reno…….or….repainting the exterior of the house! I do need curtains & bamboo blinds…..well, maybe not need but WANT…. Those will have to wait a while too :(
Anyhow, if you live nearby & haven’t been to Lucketts, check it out! It’s worth the drive.

One Kings Lane

I think I’m addicted to shopping on One Kings Lane ! If you are not a member of this fabulous shopping source, you must check it out! I have the most luck with their tastemaker tag sales. It’s such a wonderful way to find antiques or other furnishings/items for the home that you might not otherwise have access to.

This wonderful pair of vintage Swedish demi lune tables. I will probably put one in my master bedroom, underneath the mirror I already hung, & the other one will most likely go in my foyer area

I have always wanted an antique Swedish mora clock so I was thrilled when I found this!!

How awesome is this??!!! Something I’ve always coveted so I jumped at the chance to buy this beauty, and it’s huge (41″ tall)
It will go in my family room which is a large square room with vaulted ceilings. It’s going to look amazing!! Can’t wait!

I fell in love with this chair & was considering it for the office area, but someone else snatched it up while I was trying to make my mind up! I might just have reproduce this look. I just need to find a vintage wingback chair, lacquer the frame & have it recovered in this Kelly Wearstler print
Hmmmm…maybe a future project :)

Lucketts antique fair

What a gorgeous day! A perfect day to hunt for fabulous antique treasures & that’s exactly what I did at the annual Lucketts antique fair in Leesburg, Va. I got here bright and early , an hour before the gates open, but as always there’s already a line forming.

There were several booths set up on the outside of the gates so I had to do a little poking around while waiting….

Loved this concrete cherub….it’s pretty large…thought it might look cool hanging on the brick wall around the pool or somewhere else outside so I bought it!

Then I spotted this Swedish looking chest….loved the simple lines and the soft gray wash. Don’t even know where this will go but found myself buying this too!

OMG!!! Ok…..I’m really drooling now! This chandelier is GORGEOUS & quite large…. Where can I put it?? I have a huge two story foyer in the new house that I think it would be perfect for!…….but it needs to be converted so I’m feeling a bit intimidated…I better wait cause all this and I haven’t even gotten inside the gates yet! LOL

Finally got inside and I headed straight to Eksters booth! She always has the best stuff. If you haven’t heard of it, Ekster used to be an antique shop in Leesburg Va, but Caroline (the shop owner) has since closed the shop and now she holds monthly barn sales out of her barn in Hamilton Va. This is becoming a new trend now & the prices are always great since there’s not all the overhead!

This booth had tons of painted furniture. It’s called Tuscany Designs & they have a shop in downtown Frederick Md. where that’s all they do…they have a space in the back where they hand paint everything in their signature look.

Ummmmmm……yes…..I definitely pigged out! Shopping takes a lot out of ya….a girl’s gotta refuel! I’ll take a beef BBQ, fries & a water please (at least I was good with the water!)

Found this booth where the woman had these hundred year old pressed botanicals that her husband framed using antique wood floor boards. Loved the organic feel ……I bought 6!
Well….. I think I did enough damage for one day, and my shoulders are getting a sunburn, plus I’m running out of room in the vehicle….so time to head out! I’d say I did pretty good. Got in and out in about 3 hrs & bringing home a bunch of goodies :) can’t wait to see them in the new house! I can’t stop thinking about that chandelier though……maybe I will go back tomorrow & see if it’s still there! I’ll probably get a better price on it if it is…….
